Long story short... I bought a set of rims brand new about 3 yrs ago. Had a set of 33x12.50 BFG AT's mounted.
Always had a rough ride. Went through 2+ sets of front wheel bearing/hub assy's in a summer.
Had tires re-balanced; was told tires were out of round.
Bought new tires. 33x12.50 TrXus STS.
Mounted and balanced; shop said no issues.

Still noticing the rough ride, and watching the dri. side rear through my side-view mirror, I could see it wobbling.

Finally got the tires back into the shop, and this time they did a dynamic balance; they said it would also sense any side-to-side imbalance (as if the rims were out-of-round).
They said no issues, and they balanced perfectly.

I have yet to put them back on as I just got home.

But my question is, since the only thing that hasn't been changed on my truck with those tires are the lug nuts. Are the original (OEM) lug nuts the correct style (tapered) for these rims?

I don't see why not; but I also could not find any info as to which style lugnuts to use. And the lugnuts appear to be the correct style.

Just want to make sure.

Do the holes have a taper to them?

Generally, steel rims take the acorn nuts, and aluminum rims need the flat nuts with washers.

Are you using hubcentric rings?

no hubcentric rings.
and yes, the bolt holes have a taper, they appear to be exactly like the OEM Explorer rims.

tire wobble?

does anybody else see the wobble that I see? more-so on the 2nd tire.

not as easy to see from this view, but didn't feel like gettin outta my truck even tho the front tires were chocked.

this couldn't be caused by incorrect (somehow?) lug nuts, correct?

Sorry, but no, I don't see any tire wobble. I see the tire is dirty in one place which makes it appear the the tire is out of round, but if you concentrate on just the top edge of the tire in relation to the guard, there is very little movement at all.

What pressure are you running in the tires? Are they all the same? An uneven pressure in a 33" tyre may make it seem like one is wobbling.

unfortunately the video was downsized by photobucket.

but there is a noticeable wobble on the road. or when the tire is viewed from a straight-on shot.

I used a fluorescent orange paint marker, and painted every center lug. Am I the only one seeing that wobble?

and look at the lower left of the tire.. notice the tread having a waving motion? And no, that's not due to the tread design, or because of a "dirty spot" (there's no light there, you can't see the dirt, so that can't be it).

obviously, it's not as noticeable due to the lame video quality. Stupid photobucket craps down the vid quality, as does youtube, and every where else.

better quality, but slow due to running off my dinky webserver here at the house

well, it certainly wasn't me being crazy.

one of the rims had a hub that was machined out of center.

About 0.7 inches off center.

hah.. I knew it! haha.

Good find - must have driven you nuts all this time.

you don't even know... I'm so pissed at the shop I had taken the tires to, to get 'em balanced. They are even a shop that cater to off-road enthusiasts. They're also a board vendor on a local 4x4 board.

the 2 times I took the tires in to have them look at 'em, they apparently never even did a visual with the tires on the balancer.

Finally managed to get 'em to the shop that I bought the rims from. Got a new one on the way. Then to sell those since I ended up getting a new set.

you should've filed a claim for the 2 damaged hub assemblies aswell,

Si

meh... not even worth it at this point.
it's gone, done, and taken care of.
Good enough for me.

.7 out. Yikes. I'm surprised it didn't shake the wheel off.

I OFFICIALLY HATE PROCOMP RIMS

out of 9 rims... I have 3 good ones!

I didn't feel like re-reading my whole thread...

I bought a new set of 4 rims over the summer.
got tires put on new rims... unfortunately, shop I took 'em too couldn't balance 'em (not experienced enough apparently).

finally got around to gettin 'em to the shop I originally bought the rims from.
Along with the old 4... as I had posted earlier, he found one of the rims had the holes machine about 0.7 inches off center, and ordered a replacement.

throughout his process of checking the rims and tires... he mounted 2 tires on 2 old rims, and 2 tires on 2 of the new rims.

I still have a wobble.

I pulled out my spare a week ago or so, since I needed to rotate my tires anyway.

Pulled off the tire with noticeable wobble.

Much better ride... kind of.

jerking in the steering wheel now... wtf?

swap pass. side front and rear tires.

have side-view mirror pointed at tire... wobble! fawk!

go to pick up my rims... the shop held on to the 3 rims, while waiting on the replacement.

he re-checked the rims... all have runout >2/100ths of an inch (iirc).
he said unacceptable.

3 of the rims only have ~7/1000ths of an inch of runout.

so.... out of 9 effing rims... 3 run good!
1/3!

he has somebody that was wanting a couple of these rims... so he ordered up 4, hoping that he gets atleast a couple good ones.

out of the 9 I have purchased... they were purchased at MAJORLY different dates.

first set ordered in 2005-2006 area. 1 received in summer 2008. The replacement was ordered ~Nov. 08.

I effing hate ProComp rims now! Which would be pointing my finger at Eagle, as they make the rims for ProComp.
