- 92 Explorer XLT
Just picked my truck up from the shop after having the head gaskets replaced and also a new radiator installed (cracks near the transmission cooler lines, they said). It is a 92 Explorer XLT with the regular Automatic Transmission and 170,000 miles. My dad had the transmission rebuilt twice previously, I think.
I've driven it 3 times now since picking it up last night and it seems to have a problem now when it is cold. When I first put it into gear or come to a complete stop WHEN STONE COLD, I have to give it a bit of gas and then it CLUNKS suddenly into gear and starts moving (not so much a noise as a lurch as it engages hard). Happened in Reverse and Drive/OD. Within a mile of driving, though, it stops happening.
I'm wondering if it is just a little low on ATF. Like maybe some leaked when the disconnected the cooler lines from the old radiator. Or was/is there a permanent oil cooler in the radiator that didn't get filled/purged. Anything like that? Any other thoughts on what might be causing this? Thanks for your help, folks!
