Two years ago, my 1996 Explorer barely passed smog. I had the cats replaced 3 years before that. The check engine light has been on about 3 or 4 years now...So we went to get it smogged and surprise, surprise, I needed new cats AGAIN! So, we had them replaced and if you are familiar with the '96, it's not cheap in CA. It passed smog. This was last week. NOW my car is jerking, the check engine light has come back on and today, as I was accelerating up to 60, my check engine light started FLASHING! It flashed about 6 times and then stayed on again. So....I am lost as to what to do and hate to tell my husband that I am having more problems because he has enough to do already, but this is our family car (only one that has A/C) and after spending $1000, we really need to use it! All suggestions are welcome and appreciated!

Sounds like too much fuel is being dumped into the exhaust and is killing cats really fast. maybe a bad 02 sensor? or all the o2 sensors are bad.
