don't short stuff to see what happens.

if you haven't checked for blown fuses yet, check all the fuses..

i had a problem with my 4x4 (wouldn't go into low range, but would go between 2hi and 4hi) and i ended up just swapping out the transfercase (And shift motor) with a spare i had.. worked fine after the switch.

also, if you're neutral safety switch is messed up it will prevent it from shifting in and out of low range. try starting you're engine with the shifter in gear and see what happens (if it starts in gear neutral safety switch is messed up)
