This is the only one I could find. I'm still thinking if I should blend it in so it has that one-piece look... I don't know yet...

IMO I'd try and bring it up to the edge of the front of the hatch. I don't know how that would work though.

Did you use fiberglass cloth or matting when attaching the two sides of the wing together?

Fiberglass reinforced filler is what I used. Same one I used on the Rav4 project. When I get home I'll post a picture of what I used to strengthen the connection between the 2 halves of the wing. The way I did it makes it the strongest part of the wing.

Thanks, eXplorerchic.

Here's how I connected the wing together. I wasn't expecting the wing to be so hollow inside. I riveted the wing to the 3 pipes inside. It came out pretty strong.

Hey there, Steve! I just got home about an hour and half ago. Damn Manhattan traffic was crazy.

BM, those are made of plastic tubes, nothing special. I got them at Home Depot.

I don't know BM. The more I look at it, the more I think I can not pull it off cleanly. If you look at the edge of the wing it protrudes too far out for me to make it blend in with the hatch. Unless anyone got any ideas or tricks to do this, I'd leave it as is... I think.

So can this happen on a first gen explorer?

Hey X, that pic that you added the raw fiberglass. I don't understand is that the right or left side and is it upside down ore not?

Well yea, because the 2nd gen and the 1st gen pretty much have the same shape rear hatch. You have to understand though this is not a direct bolt on by a long shot. I made it fit by adding and trimming some fiberglass.

That's a bottom shot of the right passenger side. I added about .75" of fiberglass there.

X-factor, I'm going to be 100% honest with you here. I think it looks great from behind. But, from the side, I don't like the way it looks.

I learned one thing when making my rollpan, and that is, make sure you have the piece absolutely perfect before you sent it off for paint. Make sure it's shaped EXACTLY the way you want it. It would really be a disappointment if you saw something that you wanted to change AFTER the paint was on.

IMO, I think that you need to continue it out to the edge of the hatch in this pic. I think it would look more complete.

Your honesty is always appreciated, Hartman. :)

I'm STILL trying to figure out a way to blend it to the hatch. But it's just too damn thick on the side. I know exactly what you mean by making everything perfect before getting painted. The only downside to that is I am driving around with primer paint on. Not exactly the look I want.

I agree, Todd. I'll see what I could do. I am running out of time though. I am moving to my new house in a few weeks and I will be way too busy fixing THAT up.

Primer is awesome, no reason to be ashamed of primer.
