I was leaving for work yesterday morning but noticed oil/fluid on my bumper; I looked underneath, and transmission fluid was everywhere. I thought it was the gasket but kept looking, then spotted a massive crack in the case.

I'm calling the place I bought the trans from today to get them to send me a replacement, and this one took around two weeks to get, so I'm expecting about the same for the next one.

4k video of the crack

Would JB-Weld be enough to get it back on the road?

Very doubtful. It’s gonna be impossible to clean, and that doesn’t address why it cracked in the first place.

JB weld wont last.
Maybe aluminum TIG welding but i am not sure about aluminum casting material properties and what electrode you will need.

you can't weld it till you clean it.

drain your fluid (keep it) then clean with brake cleaner, scuff it with some sand paper, clean and add JB weld. It will keep it from leaking but as mentioned...thats not fixing the crack only fixing the leak.
Good luck

That's a structural failure crack, you can't do anything about that as it is in the truck. Whatever caused it will keep forcing it apart. Automatics have critical dimensions and need for perfect clearances, clean fluid etc. That crack has ruined any possibility of functioning properly, until it(if possible) was welded and checked thoroughly.

I doubt it's repairable; sorry, but that truck isn't driveable until a new trans is installed.

What are some potential causes? Is there a chance it was already cracked and it just got worse until it was leaking bad enough to notice?

I think you would have noticed that terrible crack.

Maybe it was a hairline crack that just got worse with the heat and pressure of actually running the vehicle. I've been the only one driving it and babying it too, to break it in. I'm praying they send a replacement because if not it's looking like a bankruptcy situation.

Maybe I made the wrong decision trying to repair my explorer and should've just got under another note for something else. 🙁

a bankruptcy will cost more than a transmission. If money is that critical, I’d go buy a new Kia or something similar. If you drive a lot the gas savings will make half of your payment and you won’t have to worry when you will need a new motor when your timing chain guides give out.

I've welded bell housings together before not a case, but they were broke from off roading I why would figure out why it cracked first then weld.

That crack is probably why the last person got a new transmission.

It's possible it could have been there, but I would expect that to be caught by a rebuilder as they work on one.

I wouldn't try to fix something that you plan to return. They might not take it back if you mess with it.

You never know if it was the person's first day, last day or first and last day on the job

thats 100% EXTERNAL issue.... the only things INSIDE a tranny that are "critical" are all horizontal and mostly self contained units other than the total stack up. .... spend $10 jbweld it ...drive till the replacement get there.

I talked to Shiftrite, the guy who built the one I bought. He said it's the first time he's seen a crack right there but also didn't sound surprised, so I think there's a chance he saw the damage after it was already built and just hoped for the best...

He said to drop it and send it back because he has another case but not the internals, so he will remove all the internals from the cracked one and put them in another case.

It's odd to me that a company selling "Remanufactured" transmissions wouldn't have internal parts to Remanufacture transmissions...

I'm still working it out with them, but they have accepted fault; I told them I needed a replacement first. My Dad and I will epoxy it tomorrow, which they did say was fine, and they would still take it back.

They had a snowstorm, and their shop is closed today. I will find out more info Monday.

Shiftrite accepted fault but claimed they don't have the internal parts to Reman another one, but they have another case. So if I drop it and send it back, they will swap the internals into a new case.

Does it seem odd to you that a shop that Remanufactures transmissions wouldn't have the internal parts necessary to build a transmission?

It is about as odd as walking into a grocery story and seeing empty shelves or going to a new car lot with no new cars...

I would absolutely balk at using your internals. They were ran low on fluid. I would ship his transmission back only AFTER he sent me a new one.

The fact that they are working WITH you says alot. Problems happen to EVERYTHING. It's how the company handles it is what matters! new stuff breaks, rebuilds go bad...etc..... IT HAPPENS. If they chose to step up and handle it, I would try very hard to work with them to get to the end.
