Close. It's RFID - Radio Frequency Identification. Beofre I bought my Explorer, a buddy of mine broke the blade on his RFID key for his Jeep, but he had a regular metal key in his wallet just in case the battery died and he didn't have his keys. Stroke of luck was I held the transponder end of the key that broke to the head of the metal key, and it started. This because he broke the remote and was in a hurry, so he broke the key in the door.Yeah I always kind of thought the signal to the PATS system from the chip in the key was sent through the metal key itself into the ignition?
putting the key under the shroud will not work I don't think. I have a non-PATS key for a spare that's on another key ring. I tried starting the truck with my non-PATS, with the PATS key right next to it... It didn't work

Yeah, if there's no programmed transponder chip at the lock, the car basically thinks you're trying to pop the column lock to steal it. Which is why I need to get 2 more keys. I'm not sure what the range is on it, but I would figure it needs to be really close. I also don't know if that could be done with the SecuriLock system like my truck has. Supposedly SecuriLock is a new, more secure system.
