putting a CD player in--help?

I'm putting an Aiwa Cd player in my 91 Explorer until I can save up enough for the new Sony CD player I want my question is how hard is it to put it in the Explorer? Do I have to take the whole dash apart. I have the premium JBL system in mine(eddie bauer)is it still gonna work? Will I blow the stock speakers(the aiwa's40x4)? Is there any site that'll show how hard to install? The only other cars I've ever installed a stereo in was a 90 Talon and a 87 Mustang Gt which didn't have all the dash to get through. I know this is audio question but the audio section seems to get sleeped on.

It's not that tough..You only need to pull the face off the dash, ash tray, and get a D.I.N. tool to pull the factory unit out..I picked one up at Wal-Mart for under $5..As far as tech questions www.crutchfield.com They are more then willing to help and get get you all the info you will need..

its really easy to install a cd player assuming you have the right tools. you probly wont blow the speakers, you'd be more likely to blow the premium amp. if you wanted to be sure, you could remove it. you may want to stick with the aiwa cd player instead of getting the new sony since the sony's arent all that great.

also, the HU says 40x4, but thats usually peak. it probably puts out about 18-20rms.

also, it is easier if you get a harness rather then try to splice it into the current dash wireing.

Yes, make sure you get an installation kit specific to your truck that will enable you to bypass or work with the stock amps. I had to get a special kit from crutchfield.

Circuit City people are also VERY helpful and will have the kit you need also. Just talk to the guys in the back who know what they're doing. Oh, and don't try Best Buy, they suck!

yup best buy is good for cheap things but there service dept sucks........hey whats wrong with the new sonys? i have a cdx-7000 and i love it! well anyway minei s like 45x4 and i had the premium sound system right below yours and my stuff hasnt blown yet....the speakers could use some upgrading though and a sub

The sony I want is the new on the cdx-m770. that's the one with the ABP. It's gonna cost some money but it'll be worth it. So I only have to pull out the ashtray and then is there bolts in that slot to undue the dash trim?

i thought you meant the xplod head unit. i dont know much about the other sony's

I agree, Circuit City's Install guys are very good. Sony's Car Audio Lineup doesn't really have any major problems; it's just that they cost a lot more for no apparent reason. Also, the higher number for the wattage output is next to useless. The RMS figure is far more significant. Anyway, I think the stock factory amp puts out 20 watts RMS, so any aftermarket HU should be ok.

Hey jyo

To get at the radio, pull the ashtray out, and then the two bolts on either side. Next, pull out the metal bracket the ashtray slides into. Now, gently pry around the edges of the front dash trim panel. The whole panel is held on with long plastic pegs that snap into the dash. Just go slowly and you will be able to pull the panel off. If you have an auto tranny, set the parking brake and drop the shifter into 1st. Also watch the hazard switch on the steering column; getting the panel up and over it can be a little tricky. Once you've taken the dash apart, just slide the DIN tools into the sides of the Ford radio and pull it out.

As for the wiring harness, when I first installed my CD player, I kept the factory JBL system intact (I have since upgraded everything). What you need to do is get the wiring harness specifically for the JBL system, not the Ford Premium Audio adapter. It should run you between $40 and $50 at Best Buy, CC, independent stores, etc. This is by far the easiest way to integrate your new CD player with the factory amps and JBL speakers. Good luck!

Check out the for sale forum. I know someone on this board (someone who has alot of posts, maybe even a moderator) has a Sony cdx-480 for sale. That is the same unit that I have and is a top quality CD player. It is the model that preceeded the new Explod models.

o.k., I pulled the trim off my dash and couldn't see where I was supposed to put the DIN tools, can anybody help me? I have the Premium system with the toggle volume.

There should be two holes on either side of the radio. Put the din tools in these holes and pull the radio out.
