i think it will swap over, that year ranger and explorer were very similar, they even look relatively the same. were both engines a 4.0 litre?

Welcome to this forum! The 3.0L Ranger's A4LD is different in several ways than the 4X4 4.0L Explorer's A4LD. It's definitely possible if you want to take both transmissions apart, and transfer parts from one to the other, but is similar to rebuilding it with the amount of work which is involved. The 4X4 housing, rear shaft with the snap ring, bell housing, torque converter, linkage brackets, valve body check ball configuration, and several other internal differences are involved. Since your Ranger is already a 4X4, you will have considerably less work involved (you will not have to tear apart the entire transmission). You could swap them, and reconfigure the valve body check balls, but keep in mind that you will not have the 4.0L upgrades. Several people here have just swapped them without doing anything special, and have had no complaints.

The bell housing should fit without a problem. The 3.0L bell housing is different. I would suggest that you replace the flywheel to chankshaft spacer, and rear main seal of the engine while everything is out.
