Hello, I need to preface this by saying I know less than I would like about working on vehicles. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I have a 4x4 '02 Explorer XLT 4.0L (80K miles) that is having several issues that I can't identify.
First, I am having a popping/clunking noise when I put in R, D, or occassionally am going into second gear and press the accelerator (slightly). You can, also, feel it when it happens and seems like it is coming from the rear of the vehicle. I have had both U joints replaced and that didn't work. The shop first said they think it was the rear U joint then changed to the front. After that, they said it could be in the transfer case or somewhere in the rear of the vehicle. It is just a slight jolt and you hear the noise but once it is into second gear you don't hear it anymore. It doesn't kick hard into gear and the RPMs don't change drastically. Also, 4 wheel drive seems to work just fine. It has been happening for a long while now and I didn't think anything of it until the shop said that I need to get it fixed or the world might end.
Second, I have had to replace the shift interlock solenoid 4 times and still having issues with going into P where I have to pull it down and then back into P.
Finally, recently, I have been hearing a deep rattle when the engine is warm and I turn the wheels or sometimes just apply acceleration. At one point, I cut the tires, when I heard the sound, put in reverse and slowly and steadily applied the accelerator and the engine started taxing and almost died. I don't have a stock muffler but a flowmaster and checked for the rattling around there but didn't see anything that would cause it. The rattle is getting louder, basically after the universal joints were changed a few days ago.
Sorry about all of this and I am thinking now I should've started 3 seperate threads. Any help would be greatly beneficial as I drive about an hour to work each day and don't want to be doing damage but, also, don't want to be changing parts like the transfer case just to find out it wasn't that.
