Well, after a long break, I'm back at getting my motor mated with the tranny.

I've been advised by the nice folks here to make sure the TQ is fully seated. I just checked with a straight edge, and the TQ is completely inside the bell housing.

However, the shaft does protrude beyond the bell housing about 1/2" to 1". This makes sense to me since the flex-plate on the motor is slightly recessed.

I'm now doing all this work alone, so can anybody give me the go ahead and try to mate this up again? I know it will still be difficult, but hoping someone gives me the go ahead as it will snow come Monday. Thanks! -DW

Sounds like it needs to go in further, IIRC it should be about half an inch behind your straightedge.

The TQ is behind the straightedge. was more concerned with the shaft???
 






The pilot shaft is what I am referring to.
 






You need to get it in all the way or you are going to trash the pump.
 






Not real good with the technical terms, so I will just say it is the ONLY shaft I see coming from the Torque Converter. If I ran a straightedge against that shaft, it would not clear the tranny bell-housing. The TQ would clear. But after inspecting, that shaft has to go the flex plate/fly wheel, and the flex plate/fly wheel is recessed, meaning it looks to me like a good fit with the TQ shaft protruding just a bit.

Is it possible after bolting everything down, it will pull the motor/flexplate/flywheel together to mate properly? And the shaft I am refering to should not be protruding at all? I attached an image showing the area I'm talking about. shaft is inside motor, so not visible. Thanks! -DW

I don't believe the TQ is in the tranny far enough...

This is a picture when I pulled my old engine and before I prepped the truck for the new engine I built... You can see how far inside the bellhousing the TQ is sitting and I believe I pushed it in a bit more before I installed the engine...

If the TQ is not below the surface of the bellhousing by quite a bit it is still not far enough into the front pump... DO NOT TRY TO FORCE IT TOGETHER... PLEASE...I did not use a ruler to measure how far the pilot shaft was recessed but it was definitely recessed INSIDE the bellhousing...

When the TQ is far enough back the engine/flexplate/bellhousing will all but fall into place... Then you reach inside the starter hole and pull/wiggle the TQ forward into position to get the 4 studs to slide into the flexplate holes... Then you bolt the TQ studs to the flexplate with the nuts...

No forcing yet :-) So if you ran a straightedge across the center shaft in your pic, the shaft would no protrude? Meaning shaft is completely inside bell-housing? If that's the case, that's my problem. Thanks! DW
 






i agrre with him i had a lot of trouble with my 99 with that and i trashed a pump in the proces lucky me i had a spare

Yes the pilot shaft of the TQ would be a good 1/2-3/4 inch inside the bellhousing... Oh see that red stud on the TQ? I marked it that way to reinstall the TQ in the same hole as the flexplate... It is a maintaining balance thing... I didn't have anyone recommend that but I do that as a habit when I seperate engines and transmissions...

Let us know if the TQ will not go back into the tranny far enough... Takes some effort and both hands usually...

DO NOT FORCE IT! you will regret it if you trash the pump.
