My X is in the shop and my mechanic says he thinks it is the Torque converter. My question is this, he is still doing some diagnostics, but if he is right, can the T.C. be replaced without having to rebuild or buy a new transmission. I forgot to ask him and am curious. I know you guys will know the answer.

I have a 97 XLT SOHC

A TC can be replaced with only a transmission fluid change, but I'd at least have the transmission internally inspected before you decide not to rebuild it.

Yes, the torque converter connects the engine to the transmission. If the TC was really bad, it could have eaten away at the front of the transmission where the fluid pump is driven. If they pull it out, they can easily see if there's additional damage.

Wow, another Oregonian, that's like.... 6 on this site! (hope ya didn't go to Landmark Ford) :)

In case it isn't clear

The torque converter is between the engine and the transmission. The transmission must be removed to get at it. Torque converter bolts to the engine's flywheel but just pulls out of the transmission. Torque converter is removed with the transmission to prevent seal damage. Unless there is scoreing on the shaft seal, replacement of the seal is not needed. Pan should be removed to see if there is a lot of contamination.
