Question about using 4-wheel drive??

This sounds like a stupid question, but this is the first time I have had an explorer. My question is how do you engage it into low range. I put it in 4-wheel drive for the first time since I have had it and it made a grinding sound when I started to move. It did not sound good. I hope the 4-wheel drive is still good. THanks.

That depends on what model year you are talking about. In my 99, and probably most late model 4WD's, you can go into 4-HI range (if equipped, some late model years have 2WD - 4Auto - 4LO as I understand) while travelling, though I probably wouldn't do it at a high rate of speed. To go into (or out of) 4-LO on mine, I must be fully stopped, with the transmission in neutral.
