After replacing my first gen explorers auto tranny for anouther auto tranny and having the fear of killing the new tranny i figured i would get some info on how hard it would be to convert my explorer from auto to manuel. Im just looking for info on things that need changing to install a standard tranny.
Does the clutch pedal bolt up without modification to the firewall? Is there additional vacume hoses for the transmission? Are there differences in transmission lengths

Note- if there is a thread on this please give me a link, i cant serch this site worth a darn :P

Im also curious about this.....Im looking at getting a new tranny and would prefer a manual to my auto. Thanks.

bump for good luck

Not sure of all the details (clutch pedal and such), but, to do it right, you will need to replace the computer with one programmed for a manual transmission and a few wiring issues. Not show stoppers by any means, just to be aware of this.

thanx, thats somthing i hadnt counted on, anyone know anything else i should know?

The clucth pedal for the manuals is part of the brake pedal assembly. The Brake mounting bracket just has the rod for another pedal to attach, so that should bolt right in. There is a semi writeup somewhere. You might want to try a search for "5 speed swap" It includes all of the parts needed.

I just did a quick search for the info, and there doesn't seem to be a whole lot on the subject....there are some pretty poor opinions of the M5OD tranny out there. Besides - how do you hold your beer, shift, and steer at the same time? :D

All you gotta do then is grow another six arms to eat, adjust the stereo, talk on the phone, have an arm around the little lady, and a stogie blazin. Oh to be an octopus...

As I said in anotherm thread it wouldn't be too hard. The hardest part is finding all the parts. I plan to do it once my auto goes which might be soon as I can hear the TQ converter whining.

lol thanx for the info, im sick of my a4ld and if this one dies i want to do the work myself this time to fix it (2000 or so for last one with a batt and alternator)
