I am thinking I will get a quick and dirty R&R on my main bearings. I cannot do this myself, I will have to get it done.

Suggestions? Is this possible with the motor in the car? Can I R&R the crank or will it have to come out? I have a slight bearing knock when the vehicle warms up so....

another idea is a $1000 rebuild. Pull the motor and fix what is needed.I am looking at used motors but feel like that path is to risky.

Well, ideas???

Thanks Explorer Experts!!!

I think my avatar says this but this is a 92 SOHC with 150, overall well maintained but I guess my brother in law overheated it some time back....before he gave it to me! IT does run, runs well, but......

the sohc v6 was not used in Explorers until 97or98. your motor is the OHV 4.0. you must remove the engine from the truck to get the oil pan off to access the rods/mains and the crank because of the engine crossmember.

You can't even pull the pan without unbolting the transmission.

Yes, OHV, thanks for the correction! So the motor gets pulled, right. Will we be able to Pull the crank, turn it, and replace it and the bearings?

I guess I am wondering if anyone has done this -a bottom end R&R on this motor.

I know this sounds lame, I am an OK shade tree mechanic but in my 57 years I have not tackled a bottom end. Lucky I guess.
