1996 Explorer Limited
Hi, im looking for the Relay that controls the headlights,,....where is it exactly? what does it look like? how much to replace? is it a hard job or can i do it myself? i have a 1996 Limited Explorer, 4x4.

thanks for any help......:)

What relay? Do you mean for the Headlamp Delay System -- Autolamp/Exit Delay? What are your symtoms?

The only standard equipment relay used in the exterior lighting system is part of the park lamp circuit on Explorer vehicles. The relay is non-functional except with certain options.

If a Ranger or Explorer is equipped with autolamp/exit delay or anti-theft systems, relays are used to turn the exterior lights on independent of the "headlamp switch (11654). The headlamp and parking lamp relays can be controlled by the autolamp/exit delay module located in the rearview mirror. For anti-theft, the same relays can be controlled by the Remote Anti-Theft Personality (RAP) module.

well, my drivers side headlamp stoped working, and so i changed the headlight and still it does not work,,,,.....its only that one side.....and i found that if i left it on for about an hour or so it would come on by itself.....i also closed the hood one time and it came on. i tested the voltage and found that im not getting 12v to it.....i checked all the fuses and they seem to be fine...the highbeams work fine, ...its just the low beams and the DRL is head for the drivers side headlight....im really confused.,.....the other side works perfect....please help.....sumone told me it could be the relay....so im gonna replace that and see if it helps.....but i dont know where the relay is.......sumone said its on the passenger side, a little black box with an orange sticker under the "computer"? but i think that was for a 97 Explorer.

thanks for all your help......i hope u can help me fix it cause im gonna go crazy

Inspection and Verification -- Headlamps (Without Autolamps/Exit Delay)

1. Verify the customer concern by operating the headlamp system.

2. Visually inspect the components of the headlamp system.

3. Check the wiring harness for obvious signs of shorts, opens, bad connections, or damage.

4. Check for improperly installed accessories.

5. If fault is not visually evident, determine the symptom and proceed to the following Symptom Chart.

VISUAL INSPECTION CHART
Electrical

ù Blown fuse(s)
ù Damaged headlamp bulb
ù Damaged wiring harness
ù Loose or corroded connections

PINPOINT TEST E: ONE HIGH OR ONE LOW BEAM HEADLAMP INOPERATIVE
