I have a 2000 awd xlt v8 and I have a gas card through my wife's company. I figure if it's free I'll put the best stuff in it.Is there any problem with running 93 octane in this truck?

No problems, but NO benefit. Stock Explorers are optimized for 87. You're just being wasteful.

Get an Apten chip optimzing your Ex for 93, and then you're in business.

I would agree, unless you got a chip or a hioghperformance motor, theer is no need for it.

Another thing. I'm dealing with a similar issue right now at work. Employee who felt company phones are "free". So he decided to cancel his landline and use our phone exclusively. Even rang up large long distance charges and used phone evenings and weekends. All this while he was off work because of a Worker's Comp claim.

We're now deciding whether to continue his employment with the company. Nothing is "free", and his actions are grounds for dismissal. I'm not really grasping why your wife's company's gas card is yours to use, unless her employment contract says so (or if she owns the company).

Sorry for the rant, but your example hit a nerve. I'm the Controller for my company and attitudes such as yours get under my skin. Perhaps I misunderstood your intentions, but they don't seem honourable based on what you already typed.

end rant.

"Perhaps I misunderstood your intentions, but they don't seem honourable based on what you already typed."

It is part of my wife's compensation and we only get one tank a week. Please don't take it out on me if you cannot control your own employees. I find this forum helpful most of the time, but there are a few prejudice pricks like "cell" who can ruin this forum's good vibe by going on an off subject rant to make compensate for his lack of management skills. "Nothing is free" and I shouldn't have used those words, my wife works her ass off to be where she is. So in the future it would be a good idea to think before we type.

I get it. You've got 12 posts to your credit and 2 related to this matter and you're telling me I'm ruining the good vibes? And then to make it personal by going off on my management skills? Trust me, I'm good at what I do, but I don't have to clarify that for you.

Your whole bit about the "free gas" without explaining that it was a perk came off as a "the company owes us a living" argument. I clearly stated that perhaps I misunderstood your intentions (that happens on Internet forums), but your response makes me realize I wasn't entirely misunderstood after all.

I love the irony in your comment:

"So in the future it would be a good idea to think before we type."

My thoughts exactly.

"So in the future it would be a good idea to think before we type."

Did you not see the "we" in that comment, it included me. Ironic? Only in that your misinterpratation of my statement show's what a stuck up attitude you have. And post count? Come on chief, you are grabbing at air. Get a life.

End Rant

So I won't get any better performance or milage than the 87 octane?

Gotcha "chief". Thanks for that valuable lesson.

I run 93 with nitrous, I run 93 all the time anyway. I come through richmond every thursday evening. I like free gas.

Seriously dont abuse it. Keep it minimal until you hvae had the card for a long time. You might get something better than a gas card.

In its stock form my Ex ran better with 87 than it did with 92.

Your truck will start easier with 87.

I noticed that problem too, when i ran 91 it was harder to start in the mornings. Why is that?

87 octane is more volatile. It evaporates easier than higher octane fuel. Liquid gasoline does not burn, only in the vapor phase. Therefore, the easier it evaporates, the easier it will be to start. This is particularly noticeable in the winter.

Thanks 85 Dave, least now i understand why its easier to start with 87 octane other than 91 octane.

Also explains a lot to me as well. Since I've been using a 91 program (via Apten chip), I also had my spark plugs and wires changed, and cleaned my MAF. My Ex runs as smooth as silk, but for the life of me I couldn't understand why I sometimes had some small issues when cold starting.

Use of higher than 87 octane in stock engine will also cause carbon buildup in the engine.

302, I think you overreacted to Celly's post. A simple clarification of the arrangement would have sufficed. Flaming is not looked upon kindly in this site, and it's your resorting to it that degrades the site. Just my .02

Now, as has been said before.... "Can't we all just get along."

93 has a higher flash point, meaning its resistance to burn is higher, in an explorer designed to run on 87 all your doing is lowering fuel economy because of incomplete fuel burn

best mileage i have gotten is on 87, you can even notice the mileage difference with 89

I have shown that not to be true in mu Explorer.

Al, is that because you are running a Apten chip?
