I read http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showpost.php?p=2176172&postcount=8 when we are talking about changing the gear, thats just the plastic piece right? what is its "technical" name, i went into local Ford Dealer that supplied parts and told them I needed a speedo for my truck and he kept asking what kind of bra did I want for it?!?! I told him not speedo like underwear but speedo gear and he said they didnt have that.... So is there a technical name for it? Im going to do a 19 teeth if that is all Im changing is the plastic piece, cause its the same as Maniks example.

speedometer drive gear, and if he didn't know what you were talking about go somehwere else, must be another dealer, ,

Im kind of stuck locally with them, i might be able to order offline. there used to be 4 ford dealers then 3 sold out to Honda so i get the one where even though there is 40 mechanics between all of them there isnt even a full set of teeth

its just the plastic piece right

The factory service manual calls it a speedometer gear

The plastic gear on the end of speedo cabl that goes into the trans or transfer case is the driven gear for the speedometer. The gear that is in the fransfer case or trans that drives the driven gear is the speedometer drive gear.

The plastic gear on the end of the speedo cable is very easy to change, you are looking at 10 min.

read this thread http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=158739

specifically this post that has the actual part numbers http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showpost.php?p=1983517&postcount=43

so if you're looking for a 19 tooth for a 4x4 then its the same as a 19 tooth for a manual trans wich would be C0DZ-17271-B

and so youll know what youre running into this is when i swapped my red gear in
its just held onto the end of the vss with a little clip

so i ended up calling over to Ford Dealer today the same one I dealt with cause my Oil Pan Bolt Walked Off, and I got someone different and told them what I wanted and he said they could order it for 49.99 ?!?!?!?!?! (that was for the gear) the bolt they had in stock.

I asked him about the dumb ass i talked to first time in person and he said he was fired yesterday (5/9/2010) for not doing his job and had to many complaints.

i figured I would use a 19th tooth because Manik already did the math and in his math his tire is actually same size as my original and went to 33 like me

$50 for the driven gear? Are they on drugs or just incompetent?

Thats a < $20 part. I think the most I ever paid for one was $15-ish..

What I told them was the # of teeth I needed and they asked short or long snout. I told them (they had both so I could see what was what) they gave me the gear and I was on my way. I even changed it in the parking lot of the dealer.

edit: also, its a right hand gear.. but I don't know if there is another kind..

thanks you two, yeah they seem a lil off at that dealer all the time, same dealer told me that they could give me an alignment with my lift but it would be 300.00+ when someone else did it for 100.00 but i need to find someone to do a really good alignment cause it still pulls a little bit

so now i just need to find out if its long or short before i order

According the the link that SuRrEaLNJ posted above and the pic posted.. the one for the manual trans and for the 4x4 vehicles uses the short snout one.. and Pink is a short one.

Ok thanks guys! I ordered it, now I just gotta find rims for my 33s, bought a set but the guy lied to me on what they were, so soon to have 33s. yay.

Not to date myself, but the last one I bought was $8, from the dealership in El Cajon, CA

ok guys i hope your still subscribed to this thread, im screaming :frustrate for help!!!! two things, my i think VSS?!?!? was busted to hell and back PLUS the fn bolt was rounded off... come to find out it was all broken, on top of that the one that was in was pink (ugh), have yall ever heard of a stock on being pink (19 tooth)?!?!?!?!?

manik can you do the math for me? i suck at math

stock tire 225/70r15 current tire 33/12.50r15 apparently pink stock tooth gear...

is the whole thing called VSS if i go to Ford or somewhere to get a new one, so i aint gotta fight with someone i just tell them vss?
