ok, the x has started puffing black smoke and back firing. the fuel pressure is good and I've changed the crank sensor? The computer is spitting out code 59, anyone know what that is, my book doesn't list it.

EECIV 2 digit code:
59- KOEO or continuous - low speed fuel pump circuit failure

Also listed - KOEO - AXOD 4/3 pressure switch circuit failed closed or Idle adjust service pin in use(for 2.9 MAP)
- continuous memeory code -AXOD 4/3 pressure switch circuit failed open or 2/3shift error(E4OD)

Above taken from Ford Fuel injection and electronic control by Charles Probst.

The only one that seems to apply is the low speed fuel pump circuit code.

I would look again at the fuel system, the regulator, pump, filter, injectors etc.

yeah, the fuel system is the first thing that came to my mind, but I've got 40 psi with the engine off and 35 with it on, all well within factory setting. Would a bad injector cause a variation in pressure??? Taking it to Autozone today and having them put it on their diagnostic tester, the only other thing I could think of is the throttle position sensor and I don't wanna go throwing money into parts until I'm sure it'll fix it this time. Thanks for the help.

well come to find out I was both wrong and right. It was code 159, not 59:rolleyes: so it ended up being the mass airflow sensor. the funny thing is that it was the first thing I suspected. I even cleaned like this website showed how to, but the problem was apparently in the electronics of it all, swapped it out and back to normal:D . You know this does make me miss old musclecars though, no sensors to go bad there, if the distributor and carb are working, you're rolling.

dont forget the coil... that is mucho importante ;)

man I just spend about $160 on equipment and parts on this thing, that coil better not go out. I'm even running a discount on maintenance for this weekend only to try and recoup some cash. Luckily most of the money was spent on tools:D
