And to be honest, as these cars got older, so did we. I know that after working 37 years in Navy enginerooms and then Power plants, that my hearing isn't what it used to be. So I doubt that I could tell the difference anymore. Plus if you are driving with the windows down and the sunroof open, then all you really need is something louder than the wind noise.

I hear ya. I installed car stereos for a few years, and have worked in machine shops and factories since I was 18. I’m sure both have taken their toll.

My hearing as not as bad as it could be, because of the many OEM stereos I have lived with for 40 years. I turn the volume down when the radio sound is not very clear, whether poor reception, or the low quality stock sound. With my first car, I cranked up any music that I loved, with no distortion you could perceive, because it was great at all volumes. I hate bad radio or sounds that are not very close to what the original studio created.
