Can I swap out my 3 litre auto for a beefier 4litre and new towing tranny?

I need to pull 4500lbs quite a distance. It already has a towing package and payload II, and it does OK with 2500-3000lbs because I've been doing it since new hauling crushed stone and rock powder. I like the truck, but was wondering what a new kit would cost me labor and parts.

I was looking at a dodge ram 4X4 with V8 that I know will cruise along like the load wasn't there, but I still like my little ranger.

It's been so good with no problems that I'm kinda ashamed to look at a trade. :(

It is possible but takes a lot of work. The only cost effective way to swap motors would be with a donor truck and you doing the work yourself. To be honest you would be better off buying another truck with the 4.0, or something better suited to towing. The Ranger is a great little truck but the drivetrains really aren't made for heavy towing.

If it's a one-time pull you could consider changing the rear axle ratio to one with higher gears. A swap from a junkyard truck is a possibility and wouldn't cost much if you do it yourself.

Really though if you are towing on the regular and want the truck to be happy, you may want to switch to a full size pickup.
