rattling noise from engine when under load

My problem is not pinging. My truck doesn't ping. It's some other noise.

I got that. I did say, to check the heat shield around the cat converter. Often it is only tack welded and can come loose. That's not a pinging clatter, it's from a heat shield and it is a fairly common thing.

My heat shield has been gone for a while now. It did rattle but that wasn't the cause.

Rattling noise

Greetings,

Did you ever discover the source for the rattle? I had one similar to yours this weekend that lasted for 15 seconds (in park) and then the motor (4.0L SOHC) siezed. The noise sounded like marbles bouncing around in the bell housing.

Lawrence, sounds like your timing chain cassettes or camshaft tensioners crapped out. SOHC engines notorious for this. Run a search for 00M12 and 01M01 for info about the extended warranties for these parts. Hopefully your 2001 was covered....

Wow, not sure why I didn't reply to this til now, guess I kinda gave up and really haven't been around too much. But I really want to fix this again so here I am.

Rhett: Thanks for your reply, and sorry I haven't replied til now. I believe the castings I have are 90TM or 93TM-AA. I have the T cast into them. My guss is the 90-TM because I do not see anything that looks like EGR under the hood, it's all the same as before.

I forgot to mention that I have a cone filter on the truck if this makes a difference, like intake air temps. I plugged the vacuum line that used to go to the airbox.

Before I sepnd the butloads of cash it will cost me to rebuild, I want to try the really good tune up. Like you I'm suspicious of the O2 sensor, but I will also get plugs, wires, fuel filter (have but just never got the damn tool to change it) seafoam like product, and try and tighten intake manifold bolts. I'd also like to try Lucas oil treatment stuff, looks good.

your engine could be misfiring, tune-up wouldn't hurt.

I've done some of the tune up the other day, it was really warm out, about 7 degrees C, and I was off work early, I did wires, injector cleaner, engine Revive (gets rid of carbon deposits) as well as high mileage oil change, filter and lucas oil stabilizer. I was SO surprised to find out how much ping I got rid of, I still have ping, but at least I can have the shorting block back in. I never realized how much power I lost. I have plugs too, but didn't time to put them in, got dark too soon.

In short, this has convinced me that a good tuneup can prevent and solve ping! Definately give this a try guys!
