Hey guys, a couple of questions,
First of all, my trac has just over 100,000 miles on it and ive recently started hearing a fairly pronounced noise from the engine bay. At first it was just occasional, when i start or when at higher RPM's however within the past 1000 or so miles its become almost constant. For starters, when the engine is idling there is a faint sound of a rattle every second or so, almost as if a wheel is turning and rattling at a certain point. Once i get going it becomes louder, and its loudest between 2000 and 3000 RPM's. From all of this data, i naturally assume my timing chains are starting to become an issue. I took it to one of my dads friends who is an excellent mechanic and he told me since i only have just over 100,000 i shouldn't be too worried, except considering there is a constant rattle i am quite worried.
Now for the questions; is there anything else that can cause this sort of noise? i tried to pin point it earlier today and id say its coming from the front top of the engine. could it be a fan belt squealing or something else?
Finally, how long should i wait before getting a second opinion, or just going back to my dads friend and asking him to take a better look?
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

If the timing chain slipping is a big concern for you then do not wait to get another opinion because your description is textbook tensioner.
100,000 miles means nothing on how long it will last but if you look at the truck as temporary then run it till it blows.

I have just started the rattle resolution on my truck and that sound is not going to come from anything other than possibly a bearing or CV shaft which should not be making noise on startup
