Hi,
Seems strange referring to myself as a rookie, raw no less, but after a brief tour of the site and considering my knowledge base of 'modern' automobiles, I can think of no other definition and, in fact, take a modicum of comfort knowing I am at least entering the field of play.
In point of fact, I'm 67 and have, being a good little American male, owned a large number of automobiles of all sizes, shapes and dispositions. And I've worked on them a lot.
I'm on my third Explorer. I purchased a rusted out old '92 Bauer back in '03 and overheated it whilst in a bout of lunacy. I then got a '99 Bauer. But something about the 'old' model drew me back and I bought a '94, just for me.
I like the way they look and love the way they drive. My baby, Maria, news a LOT of TLC and inasmuch as I'm going through a divorce, I will be devoting as much of that to her as my meager allowance will tolerate.
I'm sure every question I would ever posed has already been posed and am somewhat chagrined at posing the obvious. However, I realize that the search engine herein requires some knowledge on the part of the serarcher, knowledge I probably don't have else I wouldn't be looking for help.
My major problem is a profound ignorance of fuel injection systems the EEC (Electronic Engine Control?) system. All the rest seem not too far removed from my first car, a '51 ford.
I had a manual, once, but can't seem to find it, but my recollection is that it was pretty general. I want to learn more about the concept and principles behind the various operations and could use some guidance in the area.
I'm developing a much greater sensitivity to the role (importance?) of all these sensors scattered throughout the engine compartment. My first 'encounter' was when I took Maria to a transmission guy and he said there was nothing wrong with the transmission that a tune-up wouldn't cure. Huh? Of course, as you all know, he was right.
And now I have a 'problem' that I found duplicated on another site (I didn't join them and I haven't searched herein yet). Turns out, my difficulty, periodically, in getting the engine to start (spark? fuel?) was NOT, as my early-20th Century logic dictated, an electrical short in the steering column that could be corrected by moving the column, rather something amiss with an air sensor, or some such thing.
Questions I would have then, would be along the lines of obtaining a list of the sensors, their locations, their roles and some 'known' situations emanating from them. I would like to learn some about the logic, or lack thereof, behind the whole on-board computer system and if any 'options' exist. For example, is it possible to purchase 'improved' EEC units? Is it necessary? Am I a doofus for asking?
Since Maria is my second home, I expect to have comfort and amenities and added a CD radio. At least I tried until I 'discovered' the whole audio system she contains. I'm sure there are a host of options available to me to 'tone' her up and would like to hear more about that. (Right now, my CD player lies on the floor with a couple of speakers attached. Quick tacky, you know.)
And I'm sure I've only scratched the surface. I want to know more about my baby and help her be as healthy and productive as possible. She had a WONDERFUL figure until my soon-to-be-ex managed to bang her up some. But nothing that can't be fixed. And I'd like to know more about her paint job. Is it blue? Sometimes. Is it green? Sometimes. What's up with that?
