RCD RANGER 4" coilover kit for "4x4" !!

The kit is cool, but I want to see how it handles.

The Bilstein truck is the prototype, lots of differences. Mine is pre-production - what you see is very close to what you will get with the kit.

I drove it with the temporary 900/lb springs in it and it was stiff but nice. A few RCD guys have driven it with the production spring rate in it and they all told me how much better it handles and rides than stock. Khris called my while driving my truck today and said it was awesome. Said he couldn't even feel the 4" curb he hit. .

I'll definitely have to make the next Truckhaven.
And Sean and I will have to follow RockRanger and see if he can get us stuck.

HEHEHEHE that curb was smooth!!!! HAHAHA!!! It drives nice. I didn't get a chance to drive it stock so I can't really compare it though. The front end is smooth but firm. It seems like it'll corner VERY good but it soaks up the bumps nicely. I'm REALLY curious to see how it flexs. The rear in my opinion is still a little stiff. Probably due to the add-a-leaf. I know sean plans on getting some custom leafs soon. We're going to see what we can do about softening the rear. We'd pull out the add-a-leaf but supposedly those ranger leaf packs with just a block wrap up obnoxiously. The trac-bar is not necessary, it's just an accessory that we bolted on for the literature photos. Sean, you might know more then me know. They said they're including the skidplate in the kit now? Last I heard we were selling it as an accessory. Personally I think it belongs in the kit... BTW, we're photoing it tomorrow and you should definately get it Wed.

As for production, I have to get together with the design engineer and find out what I F'ed up on Sean's its. He had to do a little grinding to get it on his truck due to a couple holes off by like 1/16th of an inch. Make the needed changes, figure out how to build the gussets that were designed off seans truck to replace the hoop that was on the prototype (Bilstein) truck. Work wise that'll be pretty fast. 2-3 weeks then we'd be in production as soon as we fit it in on the floor. ONE HUGE CATCH!!!! SEMA!!!! Basically nothing is happening as far as new stuff till we get done with the SEMA slam. I'd guess that we'll be in production around the end of Nov. to begining of Dec.

So, that's the info I have now....

Khris

BTW bug the crap outta sean to get rides, and spots to meet to check it out... Slam him with emails and PM's too about it!!!!

J/K sean!!!

So Sean, did they do anything to the hub assemblies or CV joints? I'm guessing they didn't......

So has there been any kind of price, or guestimated price range for this kit yet??? I know I was hearing $2000-2500, but I was curious if they're any closer to actually deciding on something yet...

I'm not really involved in the pricing of hte kits at all. I just give them a bill of material and they figure material usage, labor, and parts. Add our profit margin and decide a price. I havn't even finalized the BOM so they havn't even started on the pricing. I honestly couldn't guess the price range cause I just don't have experience in that area. Also, I don't know where the price ranges that people are throwing around originated from. Probably the same place our 2wd kit came from that was back in like the first page of this thread back before I even worked for RCD.

As for the Hub's and CV's they shouldn't be affected at all. The angles are VERY CLOSE to stock and we don't modify them at all.

Khris

well Sean you heard it... the flood gates are opened; As khris eluded to you should be available for dirt trip to the supermarket for all of us!!:D I can't wait to hear what the marketing guys finally whip up, after Khris and his team of design guys are done with it. Marketing and Advertising is something I have a vested interest in also (school). I wish I could make the SEMA show, but I will be in Nebraska at that time... SO it looks like I'll have to wait until T-haven to see it first hand :(
2 days till your Mojave jaunt Sean; so you better be ready for a significant write-up :)

I was talking to Paul at the Expo and he said they decided to include it. So, I think that is a smart move on their part. And you guys can send me all the e-mails and PMs you want. Dosen't mean I'll answer them ;) (But I will try).

And the CVs are not the limiting factor, the ball joints are. So with this kit, you don't have to worry about CV angles.

And the Mojave trip is in two weeks. I do freelance automotive writing on the side as a second job, and I am commited to a B2B magazine on the RCD kit. So there will definately be some writing about the kit coming from me.

i take its no to pics of the upper mount. ok I go ignored ...heh think ill play lotto tomorrow...:D

no problem. I think Ford should switch FX4s and EX Sports to coils like this kit. Or why not have it as an option. Your truck looks good dude.

Oh yea and i heard they were trying to get an atlas 3.0 in there stock but it got scraped....

Any one have any ideal when this lift is going to come out. I think it look's sick and i am saving up for it know.

It should be going in to production after SEMA. Expect it to be available by retailers in the first quarter of '03.

Well, what about the Spring Rates??? Isn't the X heavier then the Ranger? Will the Springs work propperly on the X if this thing is designed for the Ranger? Just wanted to give the X's guys a heads up to prepair for this. I'm keeping my Superlift until I do my SAS, but for the rest of you, look into it while you have the chance. You may need to order different springs?

Is RCD offering a rear brake line? Just want to warn everyone that with this and the Superlift kit, once you remove the rear sway bar, the flex is too much for the stock line, so look into replacing/extending it before you disconnect the rear sway bar connects.

Is RCD offering replacement parts? I need to examine the lift alittle closer, BUT what happens if someone is mobbing around, and they break the lowwer coilover mount, where should they look to replace it, RCD or Bilsten?

Other then that, I'm really excited for all who had the pateince and plan on installing this lift. I can't wait to check it out. Good luck all!

Ron,

I can't answer all of your questions, but I will do my best. Unless you have a V-8, the Explorer front end is not that much heavier than the Ranger, i would think these springs would be fine. But, that is only my opinion. The back half of the Ex is where the major weight difference is, and you guys would be doing something different there anyway.

RCD doesn't have an extended brake line, and my Ranger has no rear sway as it is. At full droop, there is plenty of slack. This may be different on Explorers. Also, all warrenty is handled through RCD.

Updates

Cruiosu if anyone has updates about the kit maybe some new pics or something.

Just getting anxious

Do you guy's know if this lift will work on the 2 wheel drive explorer's as well

Thanks

New pics...

http://www.offroadrangers.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=8049

The truck did awesome. The coilovers soak up the bumps so amazingly well, now it is time to do something to the rear to help it keep up. Although, with weight in the back, it was pretty good. I removed my sway bar for the weekend and feel like I really got the most out of my suspension. I wasn't a fan of the traction arms, but they didn't even rub once. Plus the added traction is excellent, and as you can see, the flex is still there.

Yeah those tractions arms look like they would totally be in the way in serious wheeling conditions.

Are they really necessary?
