Can anyone suggest/recommend a code reader
I should buy or keep my eyes open for to
read the codes on my 95 XLT. Autozone reads
96 and up and I don't want to pay to have my codes read everytime.

thanks,
DJ

I didn't know there was any difference between a 95 and a 96, maybe someone will clue us in on this.

95's were halfbreeds. Not OBDI or OBDII.

IIRC the 95's have an OBII port but not OBDII computer.

If I'm wrong someone please correct me.

obd 1.5

thats correct us in the year 1995 have the forgetten step child of obd 1 and 2. If you look closely at the port it is a obd2 port but only has like 3 wires going in the back of it. I wasn't aware though that autozone wouldnt read them. thats decieving of them

I remember reading a while back that you use a paper clip to get the codes on a 95. you might try a search for that

1995 Mustangs are the same way. Now what really gets me is '94 & '95 4.6 T-Birds & Cougrs are OBDII because of the 4.6 but they didn't bother with the Explorers & Mustangs until 1996.

From poking around it appears that the 95 has an OBD II port,
but is not OBD II compliant,,,,,,

but I am still not sure if it's OBD I compliant,, Should I get an
OBD I code reader/ Or will a more expensive scanner work? Like Actron?

An OBDI reader will not plug into an OBDII port.

Just use a wire/paperclip, jump the test port and count your flashing CE light. That's what I do on my '95 all the time. ;)

The 95s have a dummy OBDII port under the steering wheel. It also has a live OBDI/EECIV port under the hood. You need to use the OBDI/EECIV port to pull the codes. Been there, done it....

The "OBDII" port under the dash on Most of the '95's is functional only to retrieve data from the "GEM" and/or "RAP" module, such as your keyless entry code, if you have the option. I believe it can also be used to program certain features such as auto locks and chime alerts, etc... all these things can also be done with combinations of ignition switching and the power door lock switch... Check the owners manual for more info on these features...

On some '95's, the port actually DOES work for OBDII readers, BUT, only on year end production models which were supposed to be tagged as '96 models, but were released as '95 year models based on demand at the time.

Read those last two posts. There is your answer. The access port for EEC-IV...which is exactly what your 95 is...is under the hood in the brake booster area on the fender apron. It is somewhat shaped like a trapezoid. The extra wire there is for the fuel pump relay.

The processor on your 95 is only 60 pins. In 96, Explorers went to OBDII with the new processor.
