ready to get a new sub

Well, someone bid pretty close to my maximum on the perfect. If I don't get that, I found a place that has the Alpine Type R single voice coil 4 ohm for$150 w/ free shipping. Is this sub as good as the perfect? I have no clue, so please help me out here. Also, today I put the hinged lid on the other side of the box. Looks really good, but not as good as it will when it is covered in something. I have to put the lock that I bought today in the lid, whch I will do tomorrow hopefully. Then after I decide what sub to go with (so I know how big to cut the speaker hole) I will cut the hole for the sub and wire it up and then enjoy the nice bass. Anyone like the box?

First of all, I have about $10k in stereo equipment in my explorer. If you think IDQ's are lacking in SPL, YOU ARE WRONG, to the best of my knowledge they have won many SPL as well as SQ competitions. They are very loud if put in the right enclosure. Install is 95% in car audio and the components count for about 5%. If you buy great subs like IDQ's or Orions and put them in a crappy box, they will suck. I have 8 Audiobahn 1200's right now and they hit like you can't believe. SQ leaves something to be desired at about 150db but they are loud. Most people dont ride around at 150db unless they are trying to go deaf or have heart problems. My suggestions would be to consider the IDQ's, they and Audiobahn are known for being some of the best stuff for the money.

first of all .... even 8 lower end subs will hit hard, so thats not a surprise

and I never said IDQ's lacked SPL, all i said was that they dont have as much. As you said, the install is what really determines it. But with the proper install, a lot of other subs in the same price range will have a higher SPL. I have no doubt that they can get up there in dB's.

rock: if you win that Infinity Perfect, you wont be sorry. I wouldnt bid over 160 or so, since you can get it new with a warrantee for around that.

My maximum bid on the sub was $160. I haven't checked it today so I don't know if I still have it. The reason why i bid on that one was because it has free shipping with it, and all the other jackasses on ebay charge an arm and a leg to ship stuff. About the Alpine, yes there is one called a Type R and it is model # SWR-1240 if you wanna check. Also here is a pic of it, too(this is a 10" model):

I may go with the IDQ if I end up not getting the Infiity on ebay. Depends on what I hear about the Alpine. I know that the Audiobahns are good and can be found fairly cheap, but I don't need the SPL type sub and you have to have a nuclear power plant to make those things happy(ok not really, but the RMS on those Audiobahns are around like 1000 watts or so). I know they are great subs because my friend has 2 of the 1200's in his truck and I really hate it when he turns up the volume real loud because my ears start to sting. I know I may sound like a wuss, but I like something that sounds good, not something that will make me deaf in a few years. And last, Lamah, do you know where I can get them for $160? I have been looking around and have only been able to find them for about $170+. Thanks guys. Also, what do you think I should cover the box with? I am now considering tweed?? Would that look good? How hard is it to put that stuff on? Vinyl will probably fade too easily, and carpet just seems too thick for my taste. Thanks again.

I know they're heavy, but I shipped a 60 lb. bumper for about half of what it costs for those guys to ship one sub. Oh well. I won that Infinity Perfect Auction the one with free shipping, so I will be getting it in about a week or so.(time it takes for him to get the money and then to send out the sub to me) I am happy. How I can cut the hole for the sub and get it ready to go. I also need to buy some covering for it today. I guess I will just go with carpet, what do you guys think? Thanks

What type of amp are you gonna use to push that Perfect?

About cutting it. Someone told me Home Depot will cut wood for you fairly cheap. It would have been easier to cut it before you put it all together. Make sure you seal that thing up tight. Use liquid nails and screws about every 3 inches to keep things air tight.

The amp I have right now is an MTX amp. It pushes out 400 watts bridged. I may be selling that amp and my Rockford Fosgate 600A4 amp and just buy a new amp for the Perfect. I want something that has a lot of power (maybe about 600 or so watts RMS) but is small. That is what I really like about my MTX, it is only about 10 inches wide so it fits perfectly underneath the small portion of the rear seat. The hole shouldn't be that hard to cut with it all together. I am just going to drill a huge hole in the middle of the circle I draw out on the wood, then use a jigsaw to cut the circle. I have used a lot of liquid nails on the whole box, but no screws. The only screws I put in were for the hinge. When I tried putting some drywall screws in the wood it split it beofre I got it all the way in. I am able to stand on the box though (I weigh about 200 pounds) and it is very sturdy. I just need to reinforce the other side of the box (storage portion of it) because I don't have anything on that side. I was thinking about maybe getting another perfect and putting it on the other side, but I figured I wouldn't and just use the money elsewhere. I am going to go now and find some carpet to cover it with. Thanks

i'm not sure what you mean by "storage side" but good luck. also, if you have 1 infinity, you dont need 600 watts. the subs are only rated to 350 and can take about 400-450, give or take some. also, make sure you get all the dust out of the box when you cut the hole. i'm not sure if the dust is bad for the sub or not, but it cant be good. and if its not kawked, do that too. at least thats my opinion.

On my box, there is a side for the sub (this side is all sealed up and ready for the sum then there is another side where I put a lid on top of it and I can put stuff in it (jackets, tow straps, anything that will fit). But it doesn't have anything supporting that side. The perfects are RMS rated at 400 or 350, and the max is 1,400 watts, so I don't know what you're talking about. About caulking, the liquid nails basically is very strong caulk and it should seal it up good. Also, I have a question. I am going to get some speaker terminals to make it a nice install. On the sub it has a 5-way binding post and the speaker terminal I want to get (instead of that threaded rod idea) has biding posts as well. What kind of terminals should I get? Is it the banana connectors or would speaker pins work? This is what looks to be on the sub as well. I am going to be getting some vinyl, too. I found some on the sounddomain.com website for about $11 for a 36"x54" piece in tan and it is UV and fade resistant. It was also cheaper than the carpet on their site which was $15 for the same size. One more thing. Should I spray or cover the thing with some sort of sound dampening material? What about some rubberized undercoating? That stuff is pretty cheap and I heard it is pretty good at sound deadening. Well I guess that is it, thanks.

with mdf, you really dont need any dampening material, and with the 5 way terminals, you dont really need a connector, just the bare wire will work fine.

also, what i meant about the subs, is that the rating is 350 watts rms and they can handle about 400-450 watts rms. Peak really doesnt mean anything. A 400 @ 4 ohm amp would be plenty for a single sub, and if its stable to 2 ohm, it would be plenty for 2 subs.

Ok, thanks for the help with the connectors and all. The box isn't MDF, but particle board, but I think they are pretty close to the same thing, aren't they? My amp isn't stable to 2 ohm, which is also why I didn't want to go with 2 subs, cause then I would have to get a new amp t put the right amount of power to those things. I juct checked out crutchfield's price of the Perfects and they have them for $299! I got mine for half that price, and mine is also brand new. Can't wait to get it. My dad is off of work tomorrow, so while I am at school he is going to take some spackling and get any of the uneven spots on it out so that the vinyl will look good on it.

yeah,. mine were half that too. crutchfield is the biggest rip off ever.

particle board isnt as sturdy as mdf, but you wont loose TOO much quality. i've heard people who use particle board and barely notice the difference. If you wanted, you could line it with fiberglass. but its not necisarry.

Just to let everyone know how its going. I am waiting for my vinyl to come in so I can cover the box, also am waiting for the sub to come in. I put the speaker terminal box on the other day and yesterday I went to Lowes and bought some blades for my dad's jigsaw and cut the hole for the sub. It is coming together very well. I haven't heard anything from sounddomain.com or the place I bought my sub from in a few days, so I am in the dark on how those orders are coming along. I also got some speaker wire from the local car stereo place and they were cheap. He pulled out about 12 feet of wire(12 awg) and only charged me $3 for it. Pretty good

i woulda waited for the sub to arrive to cut the hole. I had to cut it as close as possible then shave the parts where it got stuck. Hopefully its not too big of a hole =/

It shouldn't be. I printed out the specs on the sub off of Infinity's website and cut the hole a little smaller than what they listed, just in case so it shouldn't be a problem. I will try to take some pics later this weekend (Sunday) and post them here. Hopefully my vinyl will be in by then, and my sub, too. If not, then next week is the week, definately.

JL Audio

I can't believe that no one has mentioned JL Audio yet. I love their subwoofers. All of their differnt have fantastic output and great sound quality. I think that more IASCA finals winners use JL subs than any other brand.

I can't wait until the W7s come out.

I got the Perfect a few days ago and when I put it in my box everything (on the box) rattled, so I am not going to use that box, I went out and bought a box and am using that. I am going to take whats left of the box and make a storage compartment that will go next to the box (without a lid, cause that is what rattled the most). I just don't like my crates I have in there now, and it would just look better than the crates, too. I am just going to make it go to the wheel well and not over it and maybe cover it in charcoal carpet like the box is. I also don't think my box is sealed right, so I am soing to pull the sub out, cut the hole the size of the sub and then put some particle board inside the box, right behind the circle for the sub, and then cut that hole the right size for my sub, then it would be sort of flush mounted and the hole size would be right.

That sucks you worked on that box and it didn't turn out good. If you do put it around the wheel well I would put your amp in there. Make the amp rack look really nice. Maybe some mirrors and neon would really make things look nice.
