One of those things I might not worry about in other circumstances, but my Explorer ST is still new...

Was backing into my driveway tonight, and opened the door because I was trying to get close to the edge. Had no idea the ebrake automatically engaged. I had to apply gas to overcome the curb at the end of the driveway, so I thought nothing of the resistance, so I hit the gas hard enough to move. Only moved a few feet before realizing that was way more throttle than I needed to overcome that curb, which is when I noticed the ebrake.

Should I be worried about damaging anything? Not used to this ebrake. It’s the street package, for what it’s worth.

E-brake is supposed to automatically disengage as soon as your foot hits the throttle. Unless you're not wearing your seatbelt.
Also the rotary gear shifter automatically goes to P when you open the door.

I had taken the seatbelt off (ok longer story that I didn’t think was relevant at the time, I had already parked, realized I was crazy crooked for some reason, and got back in to re-park and didn’t buckle for that). Not sure what happened with the shifter though. Either way I’m pretty sure I moved it with the ebrake on.

I wouldn't worry about it because it was just a few feet of moving. Also, you will get used to having 4 cameras and a 360 view on the screen. I use the camera button even when going forward into a parking space which is great to be sure you are lined up with the lines and also you don't curb your wheels!

Thanks. Yeah hopefully I’m just worrying over nothing. I do like the 360 view, but I was trying to get a little closer to the edge of the driveway than the camera would show.

Yeah, if you take off your seat belt, the transmission will go to Park. And the ebrake should release automatically as soon as hit the gas.

The e brake comes on under numerous conditions.....is there a don't like button?

Yeah, yesterday was one of those Murphy’s Law days for me where stuff just kept lining up to go wrong. Beating myself up in hindsight, but was just trying to make a quick parking correction in the driveway. The ebrake is definitely more complicated than I realized.

My biggest concern was whether I screwed something up.

I'm curious as to what would happen if you had to open your door while moving. Say you noticed the door wasn't closed all the way and you had to fully shut it, or as happened to me once, you find a hairy spider in your lap while traveling down the highway and it needs to be brushed out the car door INSTANTLY. LOL

That’s pretty funny because I’ve been there too... way back when, I was driving somewhere with this pretty girl I just met. It was dark, and I saw the silhouette of a big spider crawl my way and disappear. My arachnophobic butt immediately pulled over and jumped out to knock it off. Despite that she ended up marrying me, and I’ve yet to live down that story.

Yea but what if u really really gotta open the door?

What you want is one of these small 2" convex stick-on mirrors. Placed properly they will show the rear wheel. I've used them on both outside mirrors on all my vehicles since 1967.

Good idea, thanks. I’m usually not worried about getting that close but last night was an exception.

So for sake of my OCD/paranoia, is the consensus still there’s nothing to worry about from reversing a few feet with ebrake on (both for the brake and transmission)? Just not sure how tight that think clamps down vs old school parking brakes.

Yeah, if you take off your seat belt, the transmission will go to Park..........
Have you confirmed this? If so, I'm guessing it is only when stationary and foot on the brake?

When I get in to my garage to park, I open the driver door to make sure I have proper clearance. There were couple of instances where I took of the seat belt to reach further and open the door wider and the transmission just went to park. Both my previous Lincolns (Navigator and Continental) both did the same thing.

Will it go to park when for whatever the reason you have to unbuckle your seatbelt while moving forward on the road? I hope not...

Hi. My explorer is a 1997. But here's my thoughts. If the ebrake automatically engages in park then it should disengage when put in drive or reverse. You might want to look at the owners book if it came with one or talk to who you bought it from and get more indepth info from them. Im sorry I wasent more help. Hope everything works out for you

I’m curious too, but I won’t be volunteering to test it out! I’m still kicking myself for the other night and hoping nothing was damaged.
