I have a 04 explorer 4.6L and need to change the front and rear diff fluids. What type of oil do I have to use? How much do I put, to my understanding you keep fulling until it reaches the fill hole. Any other tips would greatly be appreciated.

80w90 was the original spec. I did a little research and the new recommendatins is 90w140 (i think) I don't have the old bottle handy. Get the lube with the friction additive already in it. Otherwise, you will have to buy is separately.

UPDATE

NOTE: When servicing the rear axle on these vehicles, replace the 75w-90 gear oil with 75W-140. If the axle is equipped with a Limited Slip, add the required amount of friction modifier (XL3). When replacing the fluid, replace metal tag with F3TZ-4121-AA tag.

Check the owners manual, since it depends on if you have limited slip or not.

This is from your 04 owners manual.

Look up your door sticker to see if you have a limited slip.

Hey everyone thanks for the help,

one more question I thought both diffs with the same meaning both had limited slip

Only limited slip in the rear. the axle code on your door post should be one of these if you have LS
D1 = 3.27L
D2 = 4.10L
D4 = 3.73L
D5 = 3.55L

in the front, manual say at least for 2004 80/w90 but I put 75/w90 in mine is´t litle thiner so it is good here in the cold

Watch where you check the owners manual states 75-90 for the rear but that was supersceeded by 75-140

In mine I put 75-w90 in the front. And 75-w140 in the back and added some limited slip friction.

Is there anything specific that should be done when changing the fluid? How do you know when you have put enough in?

Just make sure you can remove bolt that you added the fluid before you drain it. And it is just fiil it up until drip thru the added hole. and be sure to add limited slip friction if you have limited slip. manual say it shuld be on bottle 4oz but I read here somewere that is better to put in two bottle. When I did mine I just put in one but I am going to add another one. becose when I have driven for some time on the highway and come back to town and take off turning I can feel the car tremble and then it stops after litle driving in town. hope that will fix it..
