Rear Brakes (I already used the search feature)

I replaced the rear shoes two weeks ago. Last night, noise started coming from the truck that sounds like its from the front end. Sounds like when the caliper sticks and pad rubs against the rotor.

So I have my sister drive the truck back and forth while I stand outside of it and it turns out the noise is coming from the rear wheels. I tore down the front end thinking it was bearings going, and repacked and regreased.

In any case, the shoes that I got had one that was larger than the other. Which goes towards the front of the vehicle and which goes towards the rear? or does it not matter?

Also, any suggestions as to what to look for when I tear the rear brakes down tomorrow? I know basically how they work and I have changed them twice, just wondering what commonly would cause this noise.

if they are the red raybestos ones, get all the paint of of the edges of the shoes......that red paint cuases a lot of noise
 






I would pick up a Haynes Manual as there is quite a large section on replacing the rear brakes. Lots of pics also which I like...
 






I have the Chiltons and went through it. That's how I learned to change the rear brakes. I just wondering if the adjuster has the shoes spread too wide for some reason.

The noise didn't start until yesterday, almost three weeks after changing them. That is what has me puzzled.

I believe the larger shoe goes towards the rear . The foward shoe grabs the drum and rotates around with the motion of the spinning drum . It forces the rear shoe hard into the drum which makes the friction to stop the vehicle (or atleast that axle) . The noise could very easy be one of the springs you had to install fell off or broke . I had one do this on a old Ford pickup I had . I installed new brakes with the old hardware and about 4 months later one of the springs snapped . The adjuster fell out and it made a hell-uva racket .
Pull the drums off and see what broke . Also, if a spring fell out , go buy the hardware kit for it from the parts store . They are cheap ................. I learned my lesson :)
 






I just had to drive it again, and I think that is what happened. Ironically, since the noise started, the truck stops a lot better. I think, I am gonna get a new hardware kit for both sides because the ones in there are pretty old.
