Hello guys, this is my first post. I just bought an 06 XLT 4x4 last week. I am a little shocked that I just found this site after my 3rd Explorer. I have been a Jeep rock crawling guy for quite a few years and have had my 4x4 Explorers as my daily drivers. Tonight I sat down at the computer wondering if Ford guys have finatic forums like Jeep guys do and look what I found. You Ford guys seem to be as messed up as Jeep guys. I LOVE IT!! Wish I found this site a long time ago. Since this is my first post I figured I should probably make it legit with a tech question.

When I first purchased the Explorer I noticed a pinging/ticking noise coming from the tail pipe after I turned the vehicle off. It slowly decreases in sound and amount as the vehicle cools down. I had a Jeep a few years ago that did this same thing but much worse. I ended up having to swap out the cat converter. Is this pinging/ticking noise coming from the tail pipe usual for this year? My previous 2 Explorers never made this sound. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yeah man its a great site, you'll learn one thing after another, I used to live on myspace when I was on my laptop, but I barely even get on now, this is my myspace :D

Welcome :D

But im not to sure what the prob is, im sure someone will know, but I know my 92 Eddie Bauer explorer makes a rattle/pinging noise when the engine shuts off, only from a broken exhaust mount on the far back of the tailpipe, have someone start your explorer, and you look under at the exhaust, see if it might just be loose.

It helps me, I have a remote start, so I can just do it when I please :p

I experience the same thing. I take it to be normal expansion/contraction of the metal parts of the exhaust system as they cool down.

Yeah think it is normal, Mine does the same thing. I only have 43,000 miles on it now and it has done it since I got it at 37,000 miles. I don't think anything is wrong. I wouldn't worry.

Thanks for the responses guys. That definately calmed my nerves. the last thing I wanted to do was replace the cat converter.
