Rear bumper guard

Can you put on a rear bumper guard (pipe type) without turning off the back up sensor on a 08 explorer limited, or do you just shut off the back up sensor.

Those sensor are way too sensitive, I think. I have a hitch-mounted bicycle carrier, and I have to turn the sensors off when it is mounted.
