I have a bad pinion/ring gear in my diff, if going above 50 mph and I let completely off the gas to coast you feel it let go and goes ZZZZZZZZZZZ! until throttle is reapplied. As long as a load is on it or not going faster its no problem. Getting noisy as well. Does anyone have any reccomendations on swapping one in from a junkyard or complete rebuild? I have heard that aftermarket gears are pretty noisy for Explorers, and trying to get it back to as close to new as possible. Just put new engine and transfer case in it. Any help would be great. Also, how do I find out what gear ratio it has. I have heard 3.55, 3.73, and 4.10. Bone stock truck, want to stay with what it has in it gear wise.

Check the sticker on your door. It will tell you the gearing and it L/S or not. A junkyard swap is pretty common, but depending upon the condition of your existing unit a re-gear might be a better solution. All depends on who is doing the work, your budget, and how much damage your existing unit has (gear, axels, housing, etc.)

I had the same noise and thought mine was going out also, but turned out once i took it apart it was a bad pinion bearing.Just bought a new bearing and had a shop press it on for me and all was good.

Are you sure it is in the differential? Could be a bad u-joint.
