Hey guys, in my 97 X, both of my rear door locks give me some problems every once in a while, not all of the time. As you know, the doors always lock automatically, so when I ahve people in the truck, I unlock all of the doors for them to get out, but sometimes, only SOMETIMES, does one of hte back doors n ot unlock all of the way, and you can get out from the inside. I have to reach inside, push the lock down, try to pull the door open from the outside (even though it is locked) then unlock the door manually and open it from the outside, then it is reset. I have checked the child locks, they are not engaged. Maybe they could be catching somehow. My friends 97 X does hte same thing everyonce in a while. Just wondering is anyone out there has experienced this, heard of it or heard of a fix!

Thanks,
Joe

It sound like your actuator is wearing out, or you have a loose wire. The actuactor is inside the door on the bottom of the door. You can see the rivet that holds it there about 6 inches below the child lock on the edge of the door.

There is two wires leading into this device, and if one fails, it won't work either way. If the lock always locks, even when it won't unlock, I would suspect the actuator of wearing out.

soemtimes if someone is in the back seat and they tug at the handle with you are trying to unlock it, it will do that, then the only way to unlock is from outside, or you have to lock all and then unlock all, and tell them not to touch it while your doing that. =)

i agree with crankcase

I have replaced two of the door lock solenoids (actuators) and they both started as intermittent problems at first, but eventually will get worse to the point that they won't work most of the time.

I have one to go, but so far it is holding out ok. I noticed this week that the lock switch is on its way out. Now it takes two or three presses of the lock switch to get the lock all the way down and affects all three locks the same.:(

door locks

my 91 has sorta the same problem. sometimes the back door(hatch) wont lock. and i simply stick a golf tee in it and it locks it. cuz i have a broken lock stem. and itll work for bout a week then i gotta go back and do it again. im tryin to fix it but i dont want to take off the back door panel. so im just gonna deal with it for now cuz its about to go in the shop for transmission work anyway.

The back hatch lock will not lock at all if the outside handle is twisted even an inch up or down. Make sure it is sitting even, and not turned one way or the other before attempting locking.
