2004 XLT
Hi all, new member here. I have a technical question I was hoping someone could answer for me. I am installing an AVIC-D3 into a 2004 Explorer XLT with the factory rear DVD. I do not care about keeping the ability for the rear DVD audio to play through the speakers, nor do I care about playing the video from the D3 on the rear screen. All I want is for the rear DVD to still function with the use of the wireless headphones for my rear passengers. I would assume it's as simple as having a remote wire and power wire, but I am not familiar with Ford wiring. If someone could tell me if this is possible and what wires I would need to use from the D3 and on the rear DVD I would greatly appreciate it.

yes it's possible, i'll try and get back to ya tomorrow on it

Great, thank you. I've just returned from doing the rest of the install. Very nice unit so far. With just the regular install it seems I'm getting power to the rear DVD, but the screen isn't working. Not sure about sound, haven't had a chance to test that yet.

was a busy day yesterday so i didn't have time. with today being mother's day and all. . . well, check back tomorrow

No worries. Kids aren't going too crazy yet, but they are getting there! :)

take this info for what you will, but the info i have/found is that you can connect the light green/black in the middle harness of the 3 factory plugs to the amp remote output of the D3. no audio through the pioneer but the headphones will still work.

if you want audio, then connect RCA ends to the following colors and connect to the audio input of the D3.

+ orange - yellow
+ red - white

sweet! did you try to add the audio from the DVD to the aux in of the D3 or just let them use the head phones

I didn't try the DVD audio into the aux. I am trying to keep from clipping any factory wires unless absolutely necessary, and I ran out of those clamp style connectors. I may try when I get more connectors, I'll let you know if I do.

Hi Insidian,
I was told by user Kelly12 to contact you.
My problem is thatI have an 2005 Ford Explorer Limited Edition, and replaced the factory head unit with a Eclipse Navigation system, problem is that the Rear Entertaiment won't work so I tried what Kelly12 sugested on this thread, I connected the Remote amp lead to the light green/black wire from from the middle factory connector, and the Rear DVD get power but shut off after a few seconds.
Did you encounter the same issue, or how did you get it to work?
Any help will be greatly appreciated, kids are killing casue they dont have their DVD in the back.

thanks

I have encountered the same issue. Anyone know how to get around this?

You guys may be running into issues with the CAN bus. This might take some serious research to get this to work. I know of one guy that actually had to keep his stock radio hidden in the vehicle to get his rear system to work. It could very well be worth your time to talk to someone like PAC Audio and get their input on what you need. They've been through this. Also, forums like this for your radio can really help. www.avic411.com is a huge resource for Pioneer products.

The 2003-2004 seems to be an odd setup. Nothing seems to be standard. I am giving up on this endeavor.

I bought an extra overhead console off ebay for a backup in case something broke some day. If anyone wants it for $200 I'd be willing to send it to them. This includes the screen and dvd in it too.
