This is getting interesting now.....

Joe D, can you post a pic? I am wondering if it has anything to do with 4 door vs 2 door.

I have it on a 4dr V6.

Question for those who installed a new unit:

When they are brand new do they expand outwards like new wheel shock or just provide resistance and stay put?

I took the one off I have now, and it seems to provide considerable damping resistance, but wont rise like a normal shock. Its not leaking. I guess its ok, I put it back for now, but I wonder if new ones are even stiffer.

I tried it without the shock and I noticed a bit less rear stiffness in the handling going around curves at moderate to higher speeds. Nothing earth shaking though, but its a slight margin of handling. Again, I guess it comes down to subjective opinion.

I took my 5TH shock as it is sometimes called off quite a while ago, and as a result of a shake in my driveline and a kind of rear end sway i put it back on again.
It does make a diference on the highway as it helps locate the pinion and keep it from swaying around as it slows the speed of the rearend sway on the highway ,

I have a 96 XL four door and it was on mine, and when i got the axle from Turdle it had a really nice one on it too , so we bolted it up, and his axle was from i think a 98 Mounty, ,

I don't think that the 2 doors had them, like I said, mine doesn't even have the mounts for one.
