well i decided to change the oil in the rear end today, now the computer at the autoparts store said to use 5.5qt of 80W90 so thats what i got.

first off after about 3.5q it was spilling out the hole, it was full. dont know how im sopposed to fit 5.5q in there.

2nd off, after i was all finished i looked at one of the metal tags off the rear end, and it says "use 75w140 synthetic" so what the hell am i sopposed to do now? its all filled up with the 80w90 non synthetic. and i am not aobut to go under there and do it all over again.

There is no way it holds 5.5 quarts.

I use Amsoil Series 2000 75W90 synthetic gear lube in my '99 with LS. Never had a problem. I do not use a friction modifier either. Mine holds just about 3 quarts.

5.5 Pints not Quarts. That would = three 1 qt bottles approx.
Use Synthetic 75w 140. 373 410 gears or any ratio traction lock require synthetic. Traction lock also needs 4 oz. friction modifier.

well, i used 1 qt lucas gear oil stabilizer, 2 qt 75W90 and a 10oz thing ofr cars with limited slip. so should i be ok? or do i need to redo it with synth oil?

anyone know where to get a chrome plated dif. cover, if i take it off agsain, i wanna at least put a new cover on.

A lot of different places have them, summitt, jegs ect. Take a look around, some even have a drain plug in them ;)

so, whats the worst that will happen if i leave the 80w90 non synthetic in there?

Probably nothing. 97 and newer diffs that require synthetic lube are considered "lubed for life" and never require changing or checking unless you suspect there is a leak or it has been submerged in water. If you are attached to you Explorer then do the right thing and drain the old stuff and replace with the synthetic. Walmart carries there own brand of full synth. for about 8.50/qt. You would need three.
Have fun

Just make sure that you are using modifier.
