Rear end water mixed in

I posted in the 2002-2005 threads the other day about rear end noise and that when opening the fill plug, brown gear oil poured out.

So enough water mixed in to over fill the rear diff fill hole?

Anyrate, how counter productive will it be if I just drain and fill? I can get a neighbor to run me to the store to get a cover gasket if it’s really needed to be thourougly cleaned.

Further research and I realize that the whole axle rear end has to come out in order a replace the gasket. That’s simply not an option at this time so I’ve had to clean it out as best I could from the rear opening and refill it.

I read some where that adding a couple things of friction modifier might help.

Otherwise, how long can I drive like this?

So, what actually happened? It’s kinda confusing with the mention of the transfer case.

Is your issue just the rear axle? If rusty water didn’t come out, you’re fine. Change the fluid, change it again, and run it.

Updates the terms. Months ago I topped of the rear end, filled it up till it came out the fill hole.

Then the other day, after towing my dual axel 12’ trailer, I started getting a rotational whirring sound. I removed the fill plug expecting it to be low (evidence of fluid leaking) and instead, it gushed out if the fill hole. So somehow, the rear diff ended up with a lot more fluid in it.

The fluid was a brown color, not the creamy color of engine oil and antifreeze. But that could just be the nature of gear oil?

I don’t know how more fluid got into the diff, or why it’s the brown color. I changed the fluid today and the sound is still there.

Probably water intrusion just not enough to milkshake the oil.

No, the first time it was barely low, but the fluid was normal looking. But it was binding way back then. Mainly on turns, from a stop.

I meant physically lifted. When I had a leaking pinion seal I could get quite a bit more fluid in if it was jacked up to one side.

Ah. No. I lifted the front end to help drain. I’d think over filling would potentially cause bubbles, or aerate the fluid.
