my '04 2WD (143K) makes a growling noise when in motion. It doesn't change when turning right or left, so I'm thinking differential. No fluid leakage on driveway.

What is the most likely problem and cause?

Thanks!

Could still be wheel bearings even though turning doesn't affect it.

Open your drivers door and look at the axle code to find out if you have a limited slip or an open differential.

Limited slip will say D4.

Then jack up the rear end and try to rotate each of the wheels individually. If you feel any grinding or if there's any play in the wheels it's a wheel bearing.

You can also crawl underneath and place your hands on the differential, then have someone else rotate the wheels so you can feel for any grinding.
