Rear Glass wont open?

My girlfriend has a 97 explorer sport and we can't figure out how to get the rear glass window to open.. Its annoying because I dont think its closed all the way and every bump we hit it rattles. She wanted to go to the dealership to have them look at but I figured try here first. The tail gate open but the glass wont, and I dont even know how to get it to open
What do you usually have to do to get it to open?
Any help is appreciated, thanks

Welcome to the site! I'm a newbie myself but from what I've learned thus far, you might want to add a bit more info into your problem. Maybe things like what you've tried so far to get it open or stuff like that! Also theres a search button that you can use. This site has many helpful tools and tips! Sorry I couldn't be more helpful in your window problem.


BTW, have you tried pushing the window closed first. not to insult your troubleshooting skills or anything

usually you just push the button where the key goes in and that gets it open... but i have a 99... thats with it unlocked of course

On a 95-97, it should be a little t-handle.. I believe turning it to the left opens it, and right opens the hatch.. on a 98-01.. the button is for the window & the handle by the license plate is for the hatch.

On my 2000 (with the push button) the lock was stuck so once I did get it open (by locking / unlocking quickly while pulling the glass) I shot some WD-40 in the locking mechanism - no problems since.

My '97 will open but didnt' like to shut completely so that my "door open" message was on and the dome light took about 1 1/2 hours to shut off. I have sprayed some major lubricant at the latch and that seems to have worked. If you can get the hatch open, can you take off the panel and access the latch to the window that way? Good luck!

BTW I was wrong its a 98... its got the push button. Today im gonna pull the back panel off... Luckly the hatch opens just the glass doesn't
