Today I was responding to my fire station on a call. When I took a sharp curve I heard a snap. When I got back from the call I noticed that both rear leaf spring shackles had rusted and snapped. I also noticed that my rear axle had shifted approximately 1 1/2- 2 inches to the left. I have got both shackles off (what was left of them) except for one bolt on the rear driverside. My need for some help is at the following issues.

-How to get the remaining bolt out ( It has appeared to have rusted to the bushing)?

-How do I go about centering the axle up?

-How do I put the springs back up and secured (do I jack up the axle or do I jack up the body)?

Thanks guys...:(

you have to get a set of jackstands under the vehicle as soon as possible.. put it under the chassis right in front of where the front of the leaf springs bolt to the chassis. Be very careful working around the vehicle, support it with as many jackstands as you can get your hands on and slide one (or both if you have room) of the rear tires under where the spare tire is located -- this will catch the vehicle in case it drops from the jackstands.

As for the bolt that wont come out, you just have to take a hammer to it -- those things are a pain to remove. The axle will be easy to center once the weight of the chassis is supported by jack stands.
