just noticed that my 92 ex has a main muffler then a smaller muffler or resonator behind it then the tail pipe. what is this little mufflers purpose in life.? since it is rusted can i get rid of it or should i replace it? will it effect performance, sound, mileage?

My guess is it's a resonator/muffler. It makes the exahust sound a little nicer/quieter. Removing it won't hurt anything...just make it louder/sound different.

i took mine off and replaced it with a few pieces of bent exhaust pipe, so i could still run my tailpipe. i noticed no difference in mileage, sound, performance, anything. it appears to be completely useless, and a new one costs like 80 bucks at Pep-Boys. cut that thing off.
