It took me about 6 hours from start to finish to take dif cover off, seal it a reinstall it, and all the other fun stuff to get to rear pinion. The whole locking pliers thing does not work to get the seal off.:( I ended up breaking the tip off a flat screwdriver and then using that screwdriver and a bfh to get it out. I also had to put the mountaineer on the ground and have somebody hold the brake to get that 1 1/16 inch nut off.:(

After the removal of the rear dif cover i discovered i had less that 2 qts of fluid left. It was driven less that 10 times at speeds no higher than 45.

Through all this i realized in need more tools as i didn't have a 12mm 12 point socket and had to kick a wrench to get drive shaft bolts off.:D

Final verdict: make sure you have the right tools or it WILL be painful (literally and metaphorically)
fix your rear seal or it could get very low like mine
After it was finally done, the drive feels like it drives a little better.
And no this isn't where the groaning noise comes from.

Is only 2 quarts + additive enough fluid for rear dif?

If I remember right, it takes a little less than 2 qts. Put the additive in 1st. then fill to bottom of fill plug.
