I did a quick search, and came up with 2 different posts for rear rotor removal...and 2 totally different answers.

Here is my question for clarity. I have a '96 Explorer XLT 4x4 (4.0)

I am trying to replace the rear rotor. I have my new rotor in hand, and just need to get the other one off. I have removed the tire, and the caliper.

I have looked, and it does not appear that i have any of the little clips retaining the rotor. Now, I have seen, just beat the piss out of it, and it will come off...and I have also seen someone say that you had to remove the backing plate for the caliper etc, to get it off. (but I think that was on a 2wd model.)

Can any one give me the good answer for mine with 4wd. Do I need to make any adjustment to the parking break or should it come off anyway? If so, how do I do that?

Thanks.

You do not need to remove the backing plate. Actually, if I remember right you can't remove it without removing the rotor first anyways. :) As long as you can't hear the parking brake rub if you turn the rotor by hand, you don't need to adjust it to remove the rotor.

Just spray a little penetrating lubricant around the hole in the center of the rotor where it meets the axle. Then take a hammer and tap the rotor in between the wheel studs. (tap/beat the heck out of it, they're both the same :) ) Just keep working at it until it finally breaks free. Make sure the parking brake is released while you are doing all that.

After installing the new rotor there shouldn't be any reason to adjust the parking brake, unless it's been driven with the parking brake engaged, but I suggest checking it anyways to make sure.

yup what he said... thats how we remove the rears rotors at my work.....
