I have a 1998 XLT, 4x4. What I've been noticing is that when you stand behind the vehicle and looking at it from a distance, you notice that the rear of the vehicle is tilted or sagging to one side. In my case, the vehicle is sagging to the left side or driver side. If you take a tape measure and measure the distance from the ground to the bumper. The left side is lower than the right side. I've been told it was the shocks, than someone else said it's the Tension adjusters in the rear, etc. Anyone have any input on this problem that could be helpful to me. Thanks in advance

Yep, your driver side leafs have sagged. That is caused by the fuel tank and the driver both being on that side. The perfect fix would be to replace your leaf packs, but the more realistic fix is to swap your rear leaf packs from left to right.

i thought that only happened on monoleaf equipped explorers? and i thought only certain year sports had monoleafs? mine is starting to do it a little, and when i go to measure it, if its bad enough, i was gonna get leafs from a 4 door, but if they, also, can sag, then whats the point?

sorry if it sounds like im coming off a little cynical; im really not, im just trying to understand so i know how to properly fix it.

thanks.

tbomb,
From my reading, any of the leafs can sag after enough time and extra weight on one side. My work Xs (all 4 doors) tend to sag to the passenger side after a few years. This is due to the fact that we load our trucks in such a way that more weight is on that side. Of course, monoleafs will sag quicker than a full pack, but all will sag with enough time and under the right conditions.

Thanks all for your input on my sagging problem. Does anyone have any idea how much would new leaf packs would cost me or of any website online that might sell them?

Thanks again

When I got 4 door leaves they started to sag in a few months. Then the aal and they started to sag again soon. I think the only permanent solution is high quality aftermarket leaves.

oh man, that sucks. thanks for the quick replies guys. i wasnt aware that they're all gonna sag. maybe ill just try to the "side-to-side" swap. doesnt amke much sense to me to blow ~$100 or so on 4 door leafs from a junkyard just so they can sag also, and high quality aftermarket leafs arent the route for me to take either - thats gonna be a lot of money to just fix a little sagging issue, which is only visually annoying.

im so annoyed right now:fire:

Try adding a add a leaf just on the side that is sagging. When it sags again, just replace the old add a leaf w/ the extra one you didnt use out of the kit.

I noticed the sag on mine also. Been looking at it for months before I finally bought a new set of springs for the rear. Got mine from JC Whitney. Installed them (with a little modification needed) and am STILL seeing the sag. I compared the replacements before instalation and they were identicle in arc and measurements. I also measured and compared the old leaves and they are identical with no indication of one being worn out.
To me this totally wasted my time (installing myself) and money.... I am wondering now if swaybars have been bent somehow to cause this...
