also

has anybody fitted stiffer springs or a leaf spring helper, I've found one in the US but is there a universal one for people who tow..

Also

I still can't find them (explorerpartsuk), not listing at the moment maybe.

I'm looking at RockAuto, they seam to have most of what I need, how expensive is the shipping (anybody used them before?)

Dampers

Rock Auto's
Monroe 40006 and 40007
£44 each + £58 shipping

On page two of the forum is a thread called "Rear Dampers".

I recommend eBay item 310151127958

OK so main rear shocks are sorted,

I still need rear anti-roll-bar drop links, bushes for the rear springs and the 5th shock (anti-sway damper?)

all my sources are coming up blank, any idea's or secret sources?

cheers

I know i have read that monroe do a fifth shock but its called something else. tried a quick search but couldn't find the thread about it.

Edit scratch that i tried a diff search term and found this
Monroe: Steering Stabilizer shock.

Bilstein: Axle Damper shock.

Might help with a search for the part

Apart from the usual unhelpfulness and lack of knowledge.... Any reason why you can't just order them from Ford?

If you want the part numbers then let me know.

I guess cost and experience of going into a ford dealers and them not knowing what an Explorer is

anybody want an axle damper and share the postage

Thanks Jan for the Monroe lead,

I found the Monroe part number (Part Number SC2958).

tried for an hour to find it without success, finally I went back to RockAuto and did a part number search and found it !:) pitty is wasn't bought up if you select explorer parts.

So I'm going to order one but I've worked out that the shipping costs only go up a fraction when ordering more than one so

1 off £17.34 for the shock and £31.00 for the postage (all + VAT)

of you order 4 off the postage only goes up by £18 or about £12 each.

does anybody else want one of these and share the postage?

I would like to order this week, so let me know...

It's your choice of course but you could be looking at £40 each with vat and duty etc. Or you could walk into Ford with a part number and pay about £20?
Seems like unecessary expense and hassle to me but as I said, your choice...

£20 ? I'll check on that tomorrow and report back

Just checked my receipts and it seems I have memory failure.:(

I paid £37 but that was a couple of years back and the Ford dealer was right next to my work place so minimum hassle.

I guess the import way might be better depending on whether Ford prices have gone up/down and whether you need to post them on to buyers when they get delivered to you.

Maybe not a lot of price difference on this item but maybe a group/bulk buy from the states could be a regular thing if any interest? I know is was common on previous forums I have used.

SS

I got a price today from my local Ford dealer of £76.02 inc VAT - so i'll import

Well when I asked at my local Ford dealer they were wanting £130 a side for the self levelling ones. Or £25 per side from states with $150 shipping got to be cheaper from states!

If only we lived in the states, can you imagine how cheep it would be to replace everything? There must be a way- maybe a pirate run, we could land a dorset coast under cover of darkness, and distribute the goods?

I sense many pirate jokes coming on!?

you must have seen my bumper sticker

skull and crossbones with 'Just A Pirate Chasing Booty' :D

Self leveling rear suspension

Hi,
I am new to this forum and being an explorer owner, I have been perusing this and the serious explorations forum for the last 4 weeks before deciding to buy a 1999/2000 x reg XLT with 132,000 miles.

Now a proud explorer owner with a couple of minor problems to sort out, one of which was a rear section exhaust.

I had the exhaust fitted, but before it was fitted I switched off the suspension leveling switch, just to be on the safe side in case the garage needed to jack up the body. I then drove it to the garage and back again.

When I got home, a distance of only 4 miles in total, I switched it back on.

Ever since then the pump comes on every time I stop and get out. It comes on immediately and stays on for 30 seconds, then off for 20 seconds and on again for 30. If I dont switch it off it continues like that.

I have tried the reset procedure that is on the American forum, but I believe their suspension system is slightly more complicated than the UK vehicle.

It didn't work, so I am now worried that I may have damaged the system somehow, as I now realise that it shouldn't be driven with the system switched off

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers
