It sounds as if my rear timing chain is ratteling, the rattle is coming from the rear of the engine at least. Its a pretty consistant rattle it gets louder as I press the gas down further. It has been doing this for about roughly a year now and doesnt sound worse just gets louder when I accelerate.

So my question is Im pretty confident there is a tsb for the rear timing chain too, does anyone happen to know what tsb number it is?

Thanks alot!

I would be interested to know about the TSB as well, although I'm pretty with nearly 186k, mine's out of the mileage window.

I tried looking through this list of tsb's for your year, but I didn't look super hard.

Here's the link

I guess I should mention I have a '99 engine in my x, but I didn't really see anything. Anyone else with anything or know of anything?

I have checked many TSB's and found nothing on the rear chain. The closest found is:

TSB 04-15-4

1999-2002 Explorer
2001-2002 Explorer Sport Trac,Explorer Sport, Ranger
1999-2002 Mountaineer

Some vehicles equipped with the 4.0 SOHC (single
over-head cam) engine may exhibit a primary timing
chain rattle noise. The noise is heard during hot
and cold engine operation (but mainly heard on cold
engines) under acceleration, typically at 2400-2500
RPM. To verify concern, accelerate in 2nd gear
between 2000 and 3000 RPM and listen for rattle
noise that sounds similar to spark knock. This may
be caused by the primary timing chain tensioner
system.

ACTION
Replace the Primary Timing Chain Tensioner, Chain
Guide, Jackshaft and Crankshaft Sprockets with a
Primary Timing Chain Tensioner Kit. The Kit
includes an improved Primary Chain Tensioner, as
well as updated Primary Chain Guide, Primary
Jackshaft, and Crankshaft Sprockets. Required Tensioner,
fasteners, Primary Timing Chain, and Front Cover Jack Shaft And
Gaskets are also included. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

Timing Chain Tensioner Kit and follow the
