I've done some searching and havent found anyone trying this. But is it possible to replace the chain and guides by removing the tranny instead of pulling the engine?

yes.

Sweet probably a little harder doing it underneath but i have to do it in a hurry dont have enough time to pull the motor.

Success managed to do my rear chain without pulling the engine, in reasonable time too.

congrats!

Has anyone undone the engine mounts and lowered the back of the trans to get to the rear timing chain?

It's in the bellhousing behind the flexplate, either engine or trans needs removed.

I didnt touch my engine mounts with the trans out you can jack the motor up and down with plenty of room. Any questions I can help since i just finished the project .

That's the first time I've heard that it's actually inside the bellhousing - thanks.

Thanks for that, I'll probably take you up on it.

The trans will most likely have to come out anyway because when I swapped in a known good trans recently it decided it wouldn't have reverse.

I also did it without taking the engine out, but let's be honest here -- it's actually pretty painful.

The only thing that pissed me off was the intake and valve cover. There is so much junk on the 4.0 oh and my exhaust it exits out the side in front of the right rear tire. I had to cut the tip off to get it out.

Wish i knew more about transmissions i could give you advice. Sorry to hear its going out.
