2004 explorer
I have a 2004 explorer, replaced rear wheel bearings, they went after less than 10,000 miles. I bought a new set made sure they were timken, and pressed them myself this time. I just noticed I have another bad bearing. I also see that both of my rear tires are wearing very fast. Is there any connection? Rear end noise has been present since I bought it with 85,000 miles. I changed gear lube and it helped some. I really like this vehicle, but I am ready to throw in the towel :(

First question - do you have the towing package (class III hitch, extra coolers, etc) or not? The towing package included a Traction-Lok rear diff along with 3.73 gears. I've heard that it could be problematic. When I bought mine, I stopped in at the dealership I used to work at, and talked with the driveline tech. When I told him what I bought (2002 Eddie) he asked if it had the package and I said no (it doesn't). His response was "good - that other diff had problems" I'm unsure if there are any service bulletins on the axle or not, but it's worth looking into.

As for the tire wear, it depends on HOW they wear - could be shocks starting to go, or alignment too. The older trucks with the solid rear axle didn't have much to worry about with rear alignment, but ours do. Best bet, pop it up the air, check the bearings for play and operation. (jackstands!) and check for noise from the diff while the wheels are turned by hand... Good luck! The only whining in our trucks should be the kids in the backseat when they need a bathroom break!

thanks, I will check the rear end spec, it did come with a towing package. Both rear tires seem to wear even, but more on the outside. I am getting ready to change out the bearing again today. Thanks again for the info.
