There was a humming sound from rear of Ex over speeds of 40 mph. Ford Service replaced both rear wheel bearings under warranty. I am concerned about the reliability.

If you are concerned about the reliability of the bearings, I don't think it is something to be too concerned about. I think I recall reading only one other post where bearings were replaced.

My Explorer is going in on 1/7/14 for a passanger side rear wheel bearing repair. This is after 98,000 miles. This will be my very first non warranty, non scheduled repair. No big deal. But, the noise/howl has become very annoying. I first thought it was just the tires getting noisy with age/mileage.

What does the howl sound like? I want to report it before the warranty is done.

The sound was similar to the sound when engaging 4-wheel drive on my late 90's Jimmy and Z-71.

Excessive road noise. The new Explorer is pretty damn quiet. So, the failed bearing noise is pretty obvious. Could only be confused with noisy tires in my estimation.

I agree. the noise was like excessive road tire noise.
